About Redmond, WA

Located on the western shore of Lake Washington in King County, Redmond WA 98052 has a history that goes back to the 1880s. The town’s first plat was filed on May 11, 1891. Steamboats carried goods and passengers up and down the Sammamish River until 1916. As a result of the timber industry’s success, the Seattle Lake Shore & Eastern Railway opened its station in the center of town.

When the timber industry faltered in the 1920s, agriculture took over as the city’s main industry. Farmers built productive farms, constructed buildings for mink and dairy cattle, and fenced land for poultry. During the Great Depression, a large portion of the city’s tax base was cut off by Prohibition. As a result, many young adults went to other cities for work.

After World War II, Redmond continued to expand. The arrival of the first Lake Washington floating bridge in 1940 marked the beginning of a slow but steady increase in population. By the 1970s, the city was a hub for high-tech industries, and the town was home to several nationally recognized biomedical and technology companies. In addition, the city was a major shipyard during World War II. The United Control company, now owned by Honeywell, was the first high-tech firm in the city.

After the completion of the Evergreen Point floating bridge in 1963, the neighborhood saw an influx of residential growth. This was followed by a booming commercial sector in the 1990s. This, in turn, led to a number of new retail and office buildings lining Main Street. As the population of the city grew, a need for better roads became apparent.

Today, Redmond is a modern, suburban community that offers plenty of options for shopping, dining, and entertainment. In addition, the city has over 17 miles of developed trails. It also has a wealth of programs that focus on building a sense of community. The city’s Comprehensive Plan contains additional resources that can be implemented in the next few decades.

During the early days of the city, steamboats were the only means of transportation. As a result, a vibrant nightlife arose in Redmond. However, as a result of the prohibition of alcohol, saloons closed. This paved the way for bootleggers to move into the neighborhood. This prompted liquor stills to open in the woods.

The largest downtown retail complex in the city is Redmond Town Center. This area is home to 110 restaurants, shops, and other entertainment venues. This is also where the city’s civic center is located. The center is home to a variety of theaters, and it has special events throughout the year. The community also benefits from a therapy dog program, which encourages dogs to help people heal.

The Redmond Saturday Market is the oldest farmer’s market in the Seattle area’s east side. It’s held on approximately 8,000 square feet of land near Redmond Town Center. The market is open May through October. It features local eatery samples and live music.
