Chiropractic has long been touted as helping a variety of conditions beyond the general aches and pains commonly associated with it. In recent years the profession has begun to focus on documenting and researching these “other” benefits. Upper cervical chiropractic, more specifically, has been proven time and time again to be highly effective in helping diseases and disorders with an unknown cause.
One such case was recently published in the Journal of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Research. (Alibhoy, Nimira DC. Resolution of Fibromyalgia Following Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care: A Case Study. Journal of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Research. June 20, 2011. pgs. 39-44)
The case study details a 45 year old female with an 11 year history of fibromyalgia. She suffered two major traumas and 10 car accidents. These types of accidents often injure the spine where the head connects to the body; the upper cervical spine. Fibromyalgia has been linked to head and neck trauma. After a thorough chiropractic and orthopedic examination, it was found that she had a problem with the uppermost bones in her neck. After receiving upper cervical chiropractic care to fix the problem in her neck, her symptoms all but disappeared, not to mention the multitude of other aches and pains she was experiencing. Although this case study is not a conclusive answer or “cure” for fibromyalgia, it does indicate that much of what we can’t explain may be associated with problems in the upper neck, or as upper cervical chiropractors call it, a subluxation.
